I live by humble means and therefore can only afford to purchase used vehicles for my transportation needs. Because of this I have relied on Oreilly Auto Parts for years to keep me on the road. A couple of month ago I purchased a starter for my pick-up from Oreilly Auto Parts. If I recall correctly I picked the life time guaranty starter. I asked the counter person how it was handled to get a replacement if I lose the recite. He explained that my name and number were kept on the computer.

I was satisfied with that answerer and then was told that there was a core charge of $40. Since I have purchased many parts I pretty much knew that there would be a core charge. I was not informed that I needed to return the box. It was about three weeks until I was able to find time to install the starter in my pick-up.

In those three weeks it snowed and rained several times. The BOX was destroyed. But I had no care. I was in no way informed of the need to keep it. The next time I cleaned the bed of my pick-up the BOX was removed with the rest of the moldy wet trash.

When I found time to return the starter I was informed for the first time that I needed the BOX. When I told the counter person that it had been destroyed he informed me that I could not get my core charge back. I told him that the BOX had been all but disintegrated with moister and had been discarded. He laughingly said that the counter person who sold it to me SHOULD have told me that the BOX was needed.

He was correct. The other counter person SHOUD HAVE told me (but did not). I do not just through $40 in the trash. In fact my reason for doing business with Oreilly Auto parts for the last 22 years has been because of my frugality and that they are usually the most reasonably priced parts in town.

I suppose that Oreilly needs some proof that the part was purchased at their store. If that is the case I don't see why the computer could not have been used to verify my purchase and the core charge. After all I was told that is how my purchase would be conformed if a the guaranty for a replacement was needed.

I left the old started there and told them as I left to store it in a worm dark cozy place and look at it in remembrance of the time they screwed an old long time customer. I can sure tell you that every time I pass the Oreilly sign I sure remember it.

I suggest that you box your old MO and start a new one by using your computer to confirm core charges. I believe it would save you from losing any more customers.

I'm trying to take a core charge in now, exact same senecio no they better *** my $40

You could have gotten your core money back without the box, that is why Oreilly stores have white new return tags and orange core return tags and red warranty tags with a easy to attach wire.

We arent selling you the box, and this situation has come up many times in the 15years I have been with Oreillys.

Way to go and not take care of the customer guys.

Try reading. It is printed on every box, new or reman, that you need to bring the core back in the original package.

Also, why wouldn't you have left the new starter in the box in a safe place until you installed it? I bought a surround sound system a few months back but I wasn't able to install it until about a week after the purchase.

However, I didn't take it home, dump all the parts out, and light the box on fire. Common sense told me that my new system, much like your new starter, could possibly have a factory defect in which case I would need to return it in the original package.

The box is a necessary part of selling remanufactured parts. The box exists to protect the part on its way to the customer, and protect it on its way back to the rebuilder.

The part has to endure a very violent environment as it goes back to the DC and is routed back to the rebuilder. We lose the credit on many unboxed parts because they are damaged beyond repair when they travel unprotected back to the rebuilder.

i think that after "years" of buying parts for used cars you would have bought one of the following: master cylinder, alternator, starter, caliper, axle, water pump, ac compressor, air/smog pump, brake shoes, etc... many, if not all, of these items have a core exchange policy.

The box is required to return it, the manufacturers decide this, not the autoparts store.

The autoparts store can negotiate and make exceptions for the customer if they choose to, at a loss of profit, so now a days they are doing that less and less. After years of buying parts its hard to put the blame for the loss of your money on someone elses hands.

I can't believe you guys are talking to him like this he does not need the box, 1 verify he bought starter there, then wire the brown tag to it and slap the core sticker on it with part number. You should do everything you can to have the customer coming back.

If you have any complaints call 1888 go oreilly... it goes to the # 1 oreilly office. We need friendly part specialist.

i have only owned piece of *** cars so i buy alot of parts and i have never had anyone tell me to bring the part back in the box but it is common sense to do so

why would you throw the greasy piece of *** anywhere but the box

my budy works and autozone and says that they do not get any credit from the manufacturer if they send the part back withought the box meaning if the store gives an *** like you their money back they lose that 40 dollars

You guys sound like you're really interested in your customers. The receipt would tell you what you had sold this customer.

The only reason for the box is for shipping puposes. The rebuilder will discard it and ship a rebuilt unit in a NEW box.

Have you ever got a rebuilt unit in a greasy box? Sounds like an excuse to get more $$ from your customer.

Dross...

You asked the person at the counter what would happen if you lose your receipt when you bought it. Were you planning on losing it? Are you a loser? Keep a folder with all the receipts for all your repairs on your vehicle. Put the mileage on it. When you sell your vehicle, hand over the originals or make copies. Watch Barrett Jackson... Notice how they rave whenever receipts are included? It DEFINATELY raises the value of the vehicle to the next owner. Lotsa people replace things when they are due, not after they break. It keeps them off the side of the road. It would be nice to know how many miles are on the battery, the shocks, the brake pads, the belts, all the usual stuff that wears out....

About the box... It is pretty much universally known... for core charges, the original box is needed.

I also work for O'Reilly's. In a perfect world,we do need the core box for the bar code on it to be processed in a timely manner. In the real world,we take care of our customers.I'd rather risk at $40 "potential" loss, versus a loss of a customer. These people make our paychecks! That should not be forgotten.

Sorry about your experience DROSS. Call a district manager next time.

Guest

Well I stand corrected. I should bend over and smill like uyou guys.

Thanks for the Oreilly snow job. The box was nothing more than a pile of moldy slime. I think I will just go get it from the dump and place it on their counter. That should make you happy.

I have baught parts for years and have never been treated the way I was that day.

It coulcd have been just the $40 but it was much more. Besides I would rather cry about it than do sopmething b brash

You know what would be the right sized package for a heavy, greasy item like your core? One that wouldn't cost anything?

One that you would want to throw away after your part was replaced? How about he box that the replacement part came in.

Forget about store policy. Think.

Guest

It's pretty common knowledge that cores need to be brought back in the original packaging.. If most people didn't already know that then there would be a lot more complaints about *** like this.

I remember working on a car for the first time when I was like 15 or 16 and getting a starter. I don't think I asked anyone, and I am pretty sure no one had to tell me. When they said "Bring back your core and get money" the light bulb above my head lit up and I instinctively took back my core in the box.

And are you really gonna use the old "no body told me so it's not my fault" excuse? Really? What are you 5?

Every reasonable adult can accept responsibility and ask questions. If you would have installed it wrong would you blame someone else as well? That counter guy didn't tell me how??

I would have given you your core, just to shut you up. The reason we need the box back is because if WE don't send it to the distributor that remanufacures those cores, WE lose that $40. So, yeah, I would've given you your $40 back and sent back your core with NO BOX and I would have got written up. And I would do it just so you would shut up because I hate whiney complainers like you.

OH I'VE BEEN A CUSTOMER FOR YEARS!!! Wah! Cry me a river.

Guest

Then tell me please Matt, how they would guaranty my starter (say after 10yrs). A length of time when anyone would have gotten rid of THE BOX.

And besides no one told me to save it. And I am not a mind reader.

Guest

it's because some people are fraudulent. 99% of the rebuilt starters/ alternators ect..

come from only a couple rebuilders, and there not stamped diffrently, to signify 1 store from another.. but the boxes ( and 'store' brands ) are diffrent. the only way to tell 1 from the other is to have the box.. otherwise you would have people returning old starters all day long for 'cores'..

I'v never been to an auto parts store that did not require the box for a core return ither.. they rebuild them, so having there stock numbers identifies as to what they are
